Dryer Vent Cleaning Smithtown – Dryer Vent Installation Tips from the Wizard

Dryer vent cleaning Smithtown: Dryer vent cleaning is the number one way to prevent dryer fires, but did you know that improper dryer vent installation is also a contributor?

During routine home maintenance planning, how much thought goes to your appliances? What about the dryer? Did you know that your dryer is more likely to start a fire than any other appliance in your home? The dryer vent system must be properly installed and maintained to ensure dryer safety and efficiency.

When you look at the back of your clothes dryer, you should see your dryer duct leading to the dryer vent attached to the outside of your home. Is your dryer vented to the outdoors? By law, all gas dryers must be vented to the outside of your home. Is the dryer duct made of flexible foil, plastic or vinyl? Or is it made of rigid metal or aluminum? The answer to this question is critical to your safety.

Vinyl, plastic or flexible foil are no longer acceptable venting material for your clothes dryer. Though this type was used, years ago, it does not meet today’s safety standards. Even the thin metal foil vents which are claimed to resist fire are easily crushed, restricting air-flow which is required for your dryer to work. When the duct is crushed, heat, lint and moisture cannot escape from the clothes dryer.

Flexible metal pipes are acceptable, but they are not recommended. The ideal material for your dryer duct is a metal pipe that is smooth inside. Sections should be joined with foil tape, not screws which protrude to the inside to catch and trap lint. They should also be joined in the direction of the air flow to minimize the chances of lint becoming trapped.

Your dryer vent system is designed to remove heat, moisture and lint from your laundry as it is being dried. If you have a gas dryer, it is also removing gas by-products from your home. Improper venting can cause a dryer fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Professional dryer vent cleaning is recommended at least once a year to keep your appliance running efficiently and safely. The fee for this service is small compared to the cost of repairing or replacing an over worked clothes dryer, or the cost of losing your home or even your life.
